The Real Reason You Keep Losing Deals (it’s not price)

Most founders drop price too fast. Learn 3 steps to handle objections with confidence—clarify fit, isolate the issue, and get their number first.

Most agency founders handle pricing objections the wrong way.

They rush to discount, hoping price is the only thing standing between them and the close.

But here’s the problem: when you discount before understanding the real issue, you teach the prospect to anchor your value to price.

Recently, I was coaching an agency owner who ran into this exact scenario:

    They pitched a $2,500/month engagement.
    The prospect hesitated.
The founder’s first instinct? Drop to $2,000.

    Sound familiar?

    Here’s the better way:

    Slow down and get curious.

Instead of rushing to lower your price, walk through three steps:

    1. Clarify fit

“Does this package give you everything you need to hit your goals?”

    2. Isolate the objection

“Besides price, is there anything that would stop you from moving forward?”

    3. Get their number first

“What price would you be willing to pay?”

    This approach does three things:

    • Uncovers the truth: Often, price isn’t the real issue.

    • Keeps you in control: You’re negotiating from information, not assumptions.

    • Positions you as a partner: You’re solving with them, not selling at them.

    Agency founders:
Stop racing to lower your price.
    Start asking better questions.

Because the fastest way to lose a deal isn’t being “too expensive”…
…it’s not understanding what your prospect actually values.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How should agency founders handle pricing objections?

Don't reach for the discount the second someone says "it's too expensive." That's a reflex, not a strategy, and it usually costs you margin you didn't need to give up. Slow down. Find out what's actually stopping them. Half the time price isn't the real objection, it's just the easiest thing to say out loud.

Why do agencies lose deals over price?

Rarely because the number was actually too high. "Too expensive" is what a prospect says when they're not sure about the offer, not sure it'll work, not sure of the timing, or not sure it's for them, and price is the polite way to exit the conversation. Ask better questions before you touch the number. You'll usually find the real objection isn't the one they led with.

Should an agency discount its services to close a deal?

Not before you know what you're actually solving for. The second you discount, the conversation stops being about value and starts being about price, and you don't get that back. Find out first whether price is genuinely the only thing standing between you and a signed deal, and what they'd actually be comfortable paying, before you cut anything.

How can agencies overcome sales objections without discounting?

Confirm the solution actually gets them what they need. Then ask directly: is there anything besides price stopping you from moving forward? If price really is the last piece, ask what they'd be comfortable paying before you propose a number yourself. Let them tell you where the line is instead of guessing and giving away margin you didn't have to.

How can agency founders improve their sales negotiation skills?

Ask instead of assume. What matters to them, what's worrying them, what they think this is actually worth. Every answer is leverage you didn't have before. A negotiation built on real questions is a conversation. One built on assumptions is just you competing against yourself on price.
